  1. 26/2/2016: Students to bring in a recipe that they are going to bake for the Taumarunui Shears fun-raising event. This was a great event to bring whanau and community together. Room R made a cook book of our recipes and gave them out to parents at student led conferences. Very positive feedback so will do again next year.

  6. 17.3.2016: Maths course for leaders. Thought I would attend to see what it is all about. So glad I went as got to meet some really nice teachers and the presenters from Hamilton were well organised and prepared. I did feel rather strange and awkward sitting with a group of principals but most of the course was based on mindset towards mathematics so I had knowledge to share.

  10. 18.05.2016: John Parsons cyberbullying course. His presentation was great and informative. He made us comfortable and spoke on very serious issues to do with teachers and looking at things concerning ipads/computers/phones to keep us as teachers safe.

  14. 11.8.2016: PB4L course in Wellington: This was amazing, I had the privilege of listening to Dr. Terry Scott present all day long on the first day. He was fun and informative. He took us right back to the beginning and then to the end of PBIS which filled some gaps for me. I now understand the stages a lot better than I did. I have a great interest in behaviour issues in children, especially boys as those are my main concern (in the classes I have taught). I feel that we do not do enough, I know we don’t and I don’t know how to fix this. Maybe we can’t as the issues I see are straight from home life and the boys’ life experience so far.
Resilience and bullying sessions where interesting too and I have implemented some suggestions from these into my classroom

  15. 14.06.2016: Alison Flutely course-Incredible Years facilitator. I wasn’t really impressed with this presentation. Had more to do with younger children and felt that she was incorporating growth mindset but in the wrong way (just my personal thoughts).

  20. 18.08.2016: Maths course. Looking at basic facts and different activities for transportion? See sheets. Would be really good to see more Turaki teachers come to course as it is based at our school(someone must have organised this?) but I am the only one going to them???4-7 Too long for ones with families.

  21. 31.08.2016: Duffy Theatre Show: Duffy Time Travel rescue. Great entertainment, the students were engaged the whole time and asked sensible questions at the end. These shows are hopefully getting the message across to our kids that it is okay to read and be a reader!

  22. 1.9.2016: At school early to cook breakfast for Father’s day for all the men in our school community. A novel way to say thanks to the dads for being there for your children.

  23. 3.9 2016: Need to check with Kylie about LTP, I’m not sure if I want to follow hers would prefer to do my own, see if this is ok with her (I value her input into my practice because she is an essential tool for my learning. First time I have has someone who is straight up and knows how to praise when it is needed.

  24. 3.10.2016: MCL (Maths-Financial Literacy-games, probability-finish off round the table). Sad news that the ladies have both lost their jobs as Ministry has stopped funding for this service so they won’t be coming down here anymore. They have both got other jobs now but are obviously upset. I have really enjoyed these nights with the ladies even though a lot of the programme material is above my head. It is great to meet and talk to all the other teachers from various schools and to meet the principals and leadership teams. From this course I take away with me: new friends, new information, new knowledge, new resources and a new concept of the MOE.
    Growth mindset/fixed mindset
I am trying to incorporate fixed mindsets into my practise. Learning as I go. I have both mindsets and am training my brain to lean towards a growth mindset. Teaching it is difficult, as I read a lot of information I am implementing strategies where and when I can. It’s a new outlook concentrating a lot on praising effort. Carol Dweck has just revised some of her approaches and it seems we may be looking at effort too much. Praising the effort students put in to their learning instead of praising the process they are using. Trying new strategies-seeking input from others-questions: what have you tried? What can you try next? This is certainly an approach that I will have as ongoing learning throughout my career.
I am trying hard each day to teach students about empathy, resilience, caring, sharing, listening skills, etc. as well as learn it myself, lucky I love to read!!!
